Welcome to The Blog

Hey readers! My name is Melanie Powers, and I am a 600-level Occupational Therapy (OT) student at Utica College (UC).

I am from a small town called Moravia, NY. I have my bachelor’s degree in exercise science at The College at Brockport

and chose UC to continue my education in becoming an occupational therapist. I now have a grad assistantship working

with graduate admissions in helping incoming students learn more about UC's OT program.

 This blog is a resource for aspiring OT students looking to come to Utica College to get their professional

education in becoming occupational therapists. I want this to be a place where anyone can ask questions,

learn more about UC’s program, and follow along with my clinical experiences starting in January 2022!

Day in the Life of a Student OT-based Therapist

My fieldwork level II is going amazing! I am currently at an elementary school in a small district. I really enjoy working with kids and I am learning so much. Each day, I am able to apply what I have learned into practice.  I start my day by leaving my house by 7:30 AM to get to the elementary school by 8 Am. When I get there, my supervisor and I run through housekeeping things, print activities, and or complete student consultations with the teachers until 8:30 AM.  We work with kindergartens and 4th-6th graders. In addition, we have also been implementing an 8-week kindergarten program which is a whole class intervention. This program works on hand dominance, grasp, hand/finger strength, and handwriting. We see our first student at 8:30 AM and then continue seeing students or a kindergarten class every 30 minutes. In total, we see about 13 students every day. Shortest Program of the North East

One of the main decision factors in choosing Utica University was that It was one of the shortest programs. I was between D’youville and Utica based on the location that I wanted and one of the reasons I chose Utica was because I was able to get my degree in 2 years instead of 3!   My experience at Utica went by so quickly! I was able to come in with all the pre-reqs that I needed and was able to jump right into learning to become an OT. This was an easier transition for me because I came right from a 4-year college but because this program starts in the fall, I was able to enjoy the summer and get ready to enter graduate school. I like that Utica's program goes into the summer after our first year and allows us to continue to pursue our degree which in return saves us time and money.  Utica classes are manageable as long as you are organized, take time to study, and most importantly take time for yourself.
