NYSOTA Conference

 Hi Everyone,

A couple weekends ago, we were able to present at the annual NYSOTA conference! There were two 600 level groups that presented posters of our summer research this weekend. My group (pictured below) poster was about our systematic review titled, The Effectiveness of School-to-Work Transition Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities. Our systematic review explored the impact of school-to-work programs for students with intellectual disabilities in the areas of employment, independent living, and social participation. Our poster got approved to be at the AOTA conference this year in San Antonio as well!

As 600 level students, you could have the opportunity to present your summer research at future conferences! This is a unique opportunity that our UC professors push for in that this is a great experience and advocacy!

Day in the Life of a Student OT-based Therapist

My fieldwork level II is going amazing! I am currently at an elementary school in a small district. I really enjoy working with kids and I am learning so much. Each day, I am able to apply what I have learned into practice.  I start my day by leaving my house by 7:30 AM to get to the elementary school by 8 Am. When I get there, my supervisor and I run through housekeeping things, print activities, and or complete student consultations with the teachers until 8:30 AM.  We work with kindergartens and 4th-6th graders. In addition, we have also been implementing an 8-week kindergarten program which is a whole class intervention. This program works on hand dominance, grasp, hand/finger strength, and handwriting. Shortest Program of the North East

One of the main decision factors in choosing Utica University was that It was one of the shortest programs. I was between D’youville and Utica based on the location that I wanted and one of the reasons I chose Utica was because I was able to get my degree in 2 years instead of 3!   My experience at Utica went by so quickly! I was able to come in with all the pre-reqs that I needed and was able to jump right into learning to become an OT. This was an easier transition for me because I came right from a 4-year college but because this program starts in the fall, I was able to enjoy the summer and get ready to enter graduate school. I like that Utica's program goes into the summer after our first year and allows us to continue to pursue our degree which in return saves us time and money.  Utica classes are manageable as long as you are organized, take time to study, and most importantly take time for yourself. Calm the Nerves Before the Interview

Hey readers! An important topic that I wanted to talk about is the OT school interview. I remember this was an important part of the process that can be nerve racking, so I wanted to share my experience and give some advice on how to nail the interview! My Experience: I completed my interview around November right before COVID hit. I remember it was one of the most stressful times because this was an important part of my future. This was scary but it was also exciting because I was one step closer to being able to become an occupational therapist. I prepared myself in that I looked up multiple possible OT interview questions, wrote out responses, and practiced with a friend.
