Day in the Life of a Student OT-based Therapist

My fieldwork level II is going amazing! I am currently at an elementary school in a small district. I really enjoy working with kids and I am learning so much. Each day, I am able to apply what I have learned into practice.  I start my day by leaving my house by 7:30 AM to get to the elementary school by 8 Am. When I get there, my supervisor and I run through housekeeping things, print activities, and or complete student consultations with the teachers until 8:30 AM.  We work with kindergartens and 4th-6th graders. In addition, we have also been implementing an 8-week kindergarten program which is a whole class intervention. This program works on hand dominance, grasp, hand/finger strength, and handwriting. We see our first student at 8:30 AM and then continue seeing students or a kindergarten class every 30 minutes. In total, we see about 13 students every day. Lunch is between 12-1 PM, which can vary depending on the student's attendance. During lunch, we document while we eat an

Shortest Program of the North East

One of the main decision factors in choosing Utica University was that It was one of the shortest programs. I was between D’youville and Utica based on the location that I wanted and one of the reasons I chose Utica was because I was able to get my degree in 2 years instead of 3!   My experience at Utica went by so quickly! I was able to come in with all the pre-reqs that I needed and was able to jump right into learning to become an OT. This was an easier transition for me because I came right from a 4-year college but because this program starts in the fall, I was able to enjoy the summer and get ready to enter graduate school. I like that Utica's program goes into the summer after our first year and allows us to continue to pursue our degree which in return saves us time and money.  Utica classes are manageable as long as you are organized, take time to study, and most importantly take time for yourself. This program cares about everyone’s well-being and wants everyone to take t

NYSOTA Conference

Image
Hi Everyone, A couple weekends ago, we were able to present at the annual NYSOTA conference! There were two 600 level groups that presented posters of our summer research this weekend. My group (pictured below) poster was about our systematic review titled, The Effectiveness of School-to-Work Transition Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities. Our systematic review explored the impact of school-to-work programs for students with intellectual disabilities in the areas of employment, independent living, and social participation. Our poster got approved to be at the AOTA conference this year in San Antonio as well! As 600 level students, you could have the opportunity to present your summer research at future conferences! This is a unique opportunity that our UC professors push for in that this is a great experience and advocacy!

Fall Symposium

As a 500 level student, one of the first group projects that you have to do is a group composite about everyone’s personalities and connect them with a character or a group of similar objects. Some examples of characters include characters from movies like monster inc,  tv shows like the office,  or ingredients to make a cookie! This was a fun and creative way to look more into our everyone’s personalities and how we can be in a group. On the first day each student completes a survey that told us about our personality type and leadership style. We then met up with our assigned groups in which was our first time meeting. We then went around and spoke about our personalities and leader style according to the surveys we took. Each group member could hear what type of personality each other has and how we are as leaders. This was an important exercise because as OTs, we will be working with multiple different people in group settings in which it is important to know the different types o
